Last weekend we went to "The Blue Forest" in Flanders, Belgium. Every year, this beautiful and stunning forest is the attraction for thousands of tourists from whole Europe. In spring times, between April and May, the bluebells start to bloom in full splendour. The forest itself is located about 25 Km south-west of the Belgian capital city Brussels. By car it took us just 1h30 to get there from our location, Raeren.
After arriving there, we learned, that there is a free shuttle bus that takes you to the inner parts of the forest, where the bluebells are located. Also, at one of the entrances of the forest, a young lady gave us a hiking map for the bluebells- and other hiking routes. On our way into the forest we walked by feet, which only took ten more minutes.
In the forest itself you can find vast carpets of blue flowers wherever you look. Well, actually they are not exactly blue. For us they appeared more like purple colored. We were astonished how many people were in the forest. It appears to be a real hotspot for all forest and nature lovers as well as photographers.
On the map there were three different "Bluebells walks", so we decided for the fully-purple line on the map, a roundway in the Hallerbos forest for about 5,1 Km. The trails are marked with coloured poles that match the colour on the map.
The forest also represents the current language division of Belgium, Flemish/Dutch is spoken north of the forest and Walloon/French is spoken south of the forest. Therefore, it is a must see in Belgium and we recommend you to go to the blue forest this or in the next years in the time when the bluebells bloom.
